Keto Mozzarella Sticks Recipe

4.6 from 97 reviews

These Keto Mozzarella Sticks are a delicious low-carb appetizer perfect for anyone following a ketogenic lifestyle. Coated in a crispy almond and Parmesan crust seasoned with Italian herbs, they’re a healthier alternative to traditional fried mozzarella sticks. Easily cooked in the air fryer, oven, or by shallow frying, they offer a gooey, cheesy center encased in a crunchy, flavorful crust.

Ingredients

Scale

Cheese

  • 6 mozzarella sticks (200g), halved

Breading

  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • ½ cup (56g) almond flour
  • ½ cup (45g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 12 tbsp (7–14g) coconut flour
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning

Instructions

  1. Prep Cheese: Cut mozzarella sticks in half and place them in the freezer for at least 1 hour to ensure they are firm and won’t melt too quickly during cooking.
  2. Breading Station: Set up two bowls – beat the egg in one, and in the other, mix together almond flour, grated Parmesan cheese, coconut flour, sea salt, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning to create the flavorful coating.
  3. Coat Sticks: Dip each frozen mozzarella stick into the beaten egg, then roll it thoroughly in the flour mixture. For an extra thick and crunchy crust, repeat this dipping and coating process once more.
  4. Freeze Again: Place the breaded mozzarella sticks on a tray and freeze them for 30 to 60 minutes to help the coating set firmly before cooking.
  5. Cook: Choose your preferred cooking method:
    – Air Fryer: Cook at 390°F for 5–6 minutes until golden and crispy.
    – Oven: Bake at 400°F for 8–10 minutes.
    – Frying: Shallow fry in oil until golden brown and crispy on all sides.
  6. Serve: Allow the mozzarella sticks to cool briefly to avoid burning, then serve warm with a side of low-carb marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Freezing the mozzarella sticks before and after breading is key to preventing the cheese from melting too quickly during cooking.
  • Double-dipping the sticks enhances the crust’s thickness and crunchiness.
  • Adjust cooking time slightly based on your oven or air fryer’s power and size of mozzarella sticks.
  • Use low-carb marinara sauce to keep the recipe keto-friendly.
  • For best results, use fresh mozzarella sticks that are firm.
