Ingredients

Scale

Sauce Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup oyster sauce
  • 1/2 cup honey (or brown sugar as substitute)
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon browning (optional, for color)

Beef Marinade

  • 1 pound steak (flank or sirloin), sliced thin
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup onions, diced
  • 1/8 cup garlic, diced (about 2 cloves)
  • 1/8 cup ginger, diced (about 1 tablespoon)
  • 16 ounces broccoli florets

Noodles & Thickening

  • 16 ounces noodles (spaghetti used as substitute for lo mein noodles)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Cook noodles: Prepare the noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain the noodles well and set aside.
  2. Make the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, honey, rice vinegar, and browning (if using). In a separate small bowl, combine cornstarch and cold water to form a slurry. Slowly whisk the slurry into the sauce mixture to thicken it. Set the sauce aside.
  3. Marinate the beef: In a large bowl, toss the sliced beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, rice wine vinegar, and ground ginger until the beef is evenly coated. Allow to marinate briefly while preparing other ingredients.
  4. Cook the beef: Heat sesame oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat. Add the marinated beef and sear it until cooked to your desired doneness, usually about 3-4 minutes. Remove the beef from the wok and set aside.
  5. Sauté aromatics and broccoli: In the same wok, add diced onions, garlic, and ginger. Stir-fry for 2 to 3 minutes until fragrant. Add broccoli florets and cooked noodles, stir-frying on high heat until broccoli is tender yet crisp.
  6. Add the sauce: Gradually pour the prepared sauce over the noodle and broccoli mixture while tossing constantly to evenly coat all the ingredients.
  7. Combine beef and heat through: Return the cooked beef to the wok and stir everything together, cooking for another 1-2 minutes until the beef is warmed through and the sauce slightly thickens.
  8. Serve: Serve the beef and broccoli lo mein noodles hot immediately.

Notes

  • You can substitute spaghetti noodles with traditional lo mein or egg noodles if available.
  • Adjust honey or brown sugar quantity to taste for sweetness.
  • Browning is optional but adds a rich color to the sauce.
  • For a gluten-free version, use tamari instead of soy sauce and ensure oyster sauce is gluten-free.
  • Slice the beef thinly against the grain for a more tender bite.
  • Do not overcook broccoli; a slight crispness retains texture and nutrients.
