These Banana Donut Holes are a delightful and healthier twist on traditional donuts, made with ripe bananas, self-rising flour, and a hint of cinnamon. Lightly sweetened and air-fried to golden perfection, these bite-sized treats are moist on the inside and have a crisp exterior. Perfect as a snack or breakfast treat, they are easy to prepare and require no deep frying.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup Self-Rising Flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup Unrefined Sugar

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Banana (from 1 large ripe banana, mashed)
  • 2 tablespoons Coconut Oil (melted, or melted vegan butter)
  • 23 teaspoons Melted Coconut Oil (for shaping and brushing)

Instructions

  1. Mash the Banana: Peel and mash one large ripe banana until you have about 1/2 cup of smooth puree. This ensures the proper moisture content for the dough.
  2. Mix and Knead Dough: Add the self-rising flour, cinnamon, and unrefined sugar to the banana puree. Stir with a rubber spatula until lumps start forming. Oil your hands with melted coconut oil and knead the mixture to form a sticky, moist dough ball. If it’s too wet, add up to 2-3 tablespoons of flour carefully. The dough should remain moist and elastic but not overly dry.
  3. Shape Donut Holes: Grease your hands with melted coconut oil and scoop about a tablespoon of dough. Roll it into a small ball and place it on a parchment-lined plate. Repeat until all dough is shaped. Lightly spray the balls with avocado oil to prepare for air frying.
  4. Arrange in Air Fryer: Spray the air fryer basket with oil. Place the donut holes in the basket spaced about 1 inch apart to allow expansion during cooking.
  5. Air Fry: Cook at 350°F (180°C) for 6-7 minutes, or until the donut holes are puffy and golden brown on the outside. They may have a slightly uneven shape, which is normal.
  6. Coat with Cinnamon Sugar: While warm, brush each donut hole with melted coconut oil and immediately roll them in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar to coat evenly. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use ripe bananas for the best natural sweetness and moisture.
  • Do not add too much additional flour, as it will make the donut holes dense and bread-like.
  • Ensure spacing in the air fryer basket to allow expanding without sticking.
  • You can substitute coconut oil with melted vegan butter or another neutral oil if preferred.
  • Adjust cinnamon sugar coating to taste; you can reduce sugar for a less sweet version.
