Ingredients

Scale

Hamburger Steaks

  • 2 lbs Ground beef – 80/20 blend for best flavor
  • ½ cup Breadcrumbs – Plain or seasoned
  • 1 Egg – Beaten
  • 1 Onion – Finely diced
  • 2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper

Creamy Gravy

  • 3 tablespoon Butter – Salted or unsalted
  • 3 tablespoon All-purpose flour – For thickening gravy
  • 2 cups Beef broth – Low sodium preferred
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 Onion – Sliced
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Mix the meat mixture: In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined to keep the patties tender.
  2. Form patties: Shape the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped hamburger patties. Set them aside while you prepare the gravy base.
  3. Brown the patties: Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat and brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  4. Prepare the gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté the sliced onions until they are translucent and soft. Stir in the flour and cook for about 2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  5. Add liquids and season: Gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream. Stir in the garlic powder and bring the mixture to a simmer until it thickens into a creamy gravy.
  6. Bake the dish: Nestle the browned patties back into the gravy in the skillet. Cover tightly with a lid or foil and bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for 45 minutes. Then remove the cover and bake for an additional 15 minutes to develop flavor and reduce the sauce slightly.
  7. Rest and serve: Remove the skillet from the oven and allow the dish to rest for 10 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld and for easy serving.

Notes

  • Use an 80/20 ground beef blend for optimal flavor and juiciness.
  • Breadcrumbs help bind the patties and keep them tender.
  • You can substitute beef broth with low-sodium chicken broth if preferred.
  • For a thicker gravy, cook a few extra minutes uncovered or add a slurry of cornstarch and water.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.
  • Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat gently on the stove or microwave.
